What's MP3?
Thanks to new computer and networking technologies, the MP3 format provides access to music instantly. Artists can promote and distribute their music via MP3 and, (often for free) audiences can play and download the music.

MP3 is an audio compression file format. MP3 is an open standard, meaning no one organization controls it. On the Internet, open standards win and this is why even without any significant corporate backing, MP3 is already the de facto standard. There are more MP3 listeners, software programs, and hardware devices than any other CD quality audio format in the world. Microsoft has built MP3 support into Windows98 SP1. Macromedia Shockwave uses MP3. The newest version of RealPlayer will support MP3. Microsoft NetShow also supports MP3.

MP3 players can be downloaded from the internet for FREE. And for as little as $20, you can buy software which will allow you to begin converting your CDs to MP3.

Downloading a 3 minute song on a 56.6 modem should take about 7 to 8 minutes, or about 15 to 20 minutes if you have a 28.8 modem connection. Once you've downloaded your music, you can listen to it on your computer, transfer it to a portable MP3 device, or even put it on a CD.
